Director of National Philanthropy & External Affairs

Mission and History

Beyond Differences mission is to inspire students nationwide to end social isolation and create cultures of belonging for everyone. We envision a world where all youth are accepted, valued, and included no matter their differences. We believe that transformative Social-Emotional Learning is the key to disrupting social isolation and that young people have the power to change the world, starting with how they treat each other at school and online. Beyond Differences works directly with middle and high school students, to help disrupt social isolation and promote inclusion in their schools.

Beyond Differences was founded in 2010 by Laura Talmus and Ace Smith to honor the life and memory of their daughter Lili Rachel Smith. Her life has inspired a student-led social justice movement empowering students to become activists and change the culture of schools. The organization has had an explosion of growth over the past few years as measured by the number of schools across the United States who are requesting our student leadership programs, innovative national awareness day tool kits, and Social and Emotional Learning curriculum. Now in its twelfth year, Beyond Differences empowers youth both locally in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as across the country in thousands of schools to be leaders in creating socially inclusive environments.

Summary

The Director of National Fundraising and External Affairs (NFEA) will be responsible for managing and directing all fundraising strategies, expanding corporate giving and our individual donor base, executing special events, and strategically increasing public awareness of Beyond Differences. The Director will guide the agency’s strategic fundraising agenda to achieve its fund development goals set by the Board of Directors and Executive Director. The Director will build and manage brand identity and all aspects of marketing to raise awareness of the agency and its programs. The NFEA Director will supervise one Development Associate/Admin staff and work with a team including the grant writing consultant, marketing/public relations consultant, and national finance consultant.  The NFEA Director will report to the Executive Director.

As the Director of National Philanthropy and External Affairs, you will be a strong advocate for the mission, and help us build an equitable and inclusive school culture for youth. You thrive in cultivating relationships and are energized by social events.  You are able to speak confidently at public events and with high profile donors.  You are creative, innovative and able to multitask at a high level. You are collaborative, self-motivated, and approach your work with an inquisitive mind and a sense of humor.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and implement annual fundraising plans aligned to fundraising priorities and targets anchored to Beyond Differences’ strategic and legacy plan, which includes, but not limited to, strategic initiatives for securing major gifts, ongoing stewardship, special events, online communications and grant management.
  • Oversee Beyond Differences’  individual and institutional giving including gifts at all levels, donations toward large-scale projects and multi-year commitments.
  • Cultivate existing relationships with individual and major donors and funders around the country including potential travel.
  • Take responsibility for the cultivation, solicitation, gift closure and stewardship of prospective donors and current donors in portfolio.
  • Develop fundraising strategies that correlate with Beyond Differences’ programs and align with donor philanthropic objectives – frame Beyond Differences’ programs as fundraising priorities in a way that will engender support and partnerships.
  • Manage and cultivate a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, from youth participants, employees and board members to donors (both high net and individuals).
  • Plan and manage an annual development event to highlight the successes of Beyond Differences and to raise funds for targeted priorities.
  • Create a giving campaign for the Advisory Council and the Alumni Board of Directors.
  • Provide critical fundraising capacity to help Beyond Differences’ strategically engage funders, improve communications,
    and increase non government private revenue.
  • Collaborate with grant writing consultant including program design, tracking of grant application, and grant deliverables.
  • Contribute, alongside the Executive Director and the Public Relations Consultant, to a comprehensive marketing plan that includes events,
    media relations, press releases, social networking, Annual Report, website, newsletters, and branding.
  • Manage donor management system (Salesforce) to effectively track and cultivate donors and prospects.
  • Positively collaborate with the Executive Director, and lead an internal team to meet aggressive fundraising goals.
  • Represent Beyond Differences at public speaking engagements throughout the community.
  • Oversee the administrative coordinator’s role in donor database management and reporting.
  • Oversee and manage volunteers supporting Beyond Differences’ events and programs.
  • Travel up to 1x month to engage and cultivate donors in major metropolitan areas.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience in SF Bay Area and national events, major donor and fund development, public relations, community engagement, and nonprofit development required.
  • Proven experience in managing the full cycle of cultivation-solicitation-stewardship with major donors.
  • Experience implementing in-person meetings and events in the Bay Area and nationally as well as virtual meetings and events.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with active listening.
  • Supervision experience.
  • Ability to travel nationally as needed potentially 1x per month.
  • Strong computer skills; Gmail, Google Docs, Zoom and MS Office required. Salesforce experience preferred.
  • Valid California driver’s license with proof of insurance required, background check will be conducted
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Ability to commute to San Rafael, CA.

Schedule:

Your schedule will be M-F, with a relatively flexible start and end time. About 10 hours per month will be spent at evening and weekend events. Once our office reopens, this position will be a hybrid of both remote and in-person work, with meetings and events held throughout the Bay Area and nationally. Some travel is required nationally –  typically 1x per month.

Benefits:

  • Annual salary range $120,000 -$130,000 based on experience

National Programs Coordinator

Position Overview:
Under the supervision of Beyond Differences’ Director of National Programs, the National Programs Coordinator is responsible for supporting all aspects of our National Programs (Know Your Classmates, No One Eats Alone, and Be Kind Online). This is a full-time position located in Marin County. The candidate must be self-directed, work independently, efficiently, and flexible as occasional meetings and events will take place on weekends and evenings.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Programmatic Coordination & Data Support

  • Process all new school/educator sign-ups in coordination with Beyond Differences’ database and administrative assistant.
  • Oversee storage, shipping and receiving of national program supplies.
  • Coordinate and source a high volume of supplies for the National Program toolkits, research and recommend the right vendors and stay within budget.
  • Support Director of National Programs in vendor management (USPS, graphic designers, various suppliers).
  • Manage the delivery and storage of all supplies for National Programs.
  • Print shipping labels and oversee the shipping of over 3,500 boxes annually.
  • Coordinate with the communications team to organize, manage, and pull data for emails and other social media needs.
  • Pull reports from Salesforce for senior staff.
  • Create and write branded Google slide-decks and content related to curriculum, various events, and presentations.
  • Assist in Zoom tech support for National Program Webinars.
  • Assist the Director of National Programs in any other manner.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Recruit, Manage, and schedule volunteers.
  • Manage the schedule to ensure enough volunteers are available.
  • Oversee volunteers for quality control of toolkit assembly and preparation.
  • Prepare office and packing supplies for volunteers.
  • Coordinate volunteer events.
  • Maintain an ongoing relationship with volunteers.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating a Volunteer Appreciation Party in the spring.

Required Qualifications:

  • Database experience, preferably Salesforce NPSP
  • Detail-oriented and analytical when it comes to data
  • Strong computer skills; Gmail, Google Docs, Zoom, MS Office, and Salesforce
  • A real team player, open to feedback, thoughtful and considerate to others
  • Self-motivated, mature, strategic thinker, and well organized

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience creating youth-centered content with a DEI lens, OR willingness to learn
  • Experience working in youth development programs or with diverse populations
  • Bachelor’s degree

Work Environment:

  • Must be able to work in a hybrid setting
  • Must be able to manually operate and use a computer and phone
  • Must be able to work at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to lift and transport boxes up to 30 pounds
  • May involve travel, use of a vehicle and valid Driver’s License is required
  • Must reside in the San Francisco Bay Area and be able to commute to Marin County

Benefits:

  • Full-time, 40 hours/week, hourly rate between $26.44 – $28.85 based on experience

  • Hybrid options negotiable (4 days in-person and 1 day remote to start)
