U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy Cites Beyond Differences as a Program to End Social Isolation in Youth and Build Connection

On June 23, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy sat down with Jenna Bush Hager at the Coalition to End Social Isolation’s Conversations on Belonging, Connection, & Wellbeing: A Reflection to discuss one of the nation’s pressing health concerns.  Dr. Murthy talked about the need for connection as so integral to survival, saying “it should be as normal as hunger and thirst.”

They discussed the serious health ramifications of social isolation and loneliness in people of all ages ranging from mental health issues to premature death. When asked about solutions for combatting social isolation among children and teens, the Surgeon General singled out Beyond Differences’ programs as the number one solution to curbing social isolation in youth. Back in February, when Dr. Murthy testified in front of the Senate Finance Committee on their hearing on youth mental health care, he pointed to Beyond Differences and its peer-to-peer support program that helps build connection, self-esteem and a culture of belonging at schools.

Beyond Differences’ programs wrap around the entire school year and include programs that address race, religion, culture, and identity. The programs include original interactive lessons, art projects, and student leadership units to help students understand and respect differences, find common ground, connect and stand up for their classmates.
